TODD MACLEAN: Travis Tritt packs Credit Union Place

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I.  – What a buzz it was in Credit Union Place in Summerside last Saturday night when the roar of 2,200 fans filled the sold-out arena as two-time Grammy Award winner Travis Tritt and his six-piece backing band took the stage.
The performance got underway at 8 p.m., with no opening act, as Tritt played straight through until 9:50 p.m. “We’re gonna be doing songs tonight that’ve been around for a while,” said Tritt, as the crowd responded with loud cheers. “We came here to party with y’all,” he added. And party it up with the big career hits he did.
The Grammy Award-winning tune, “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’ ”, the 1994 hit “Ten Feet Tall” and “Bulletproof”, “Southbound Train” and “Outlaws Like Us”, to name a few, were some of the big numbers that highlighted the first half of the show. Getting into it with boogie-woogie dance moves and lots of head-throwing-back laughs, the pumped-up 54 year-old even spun around in a jumping circle with his acoustic guitar during the entire bridge solo for their kicking cover of The Eagles’ “Take it Easy”. “Any love song fans here tonight?” Tritt asked, as he took a seat at centrestage on a leather chair for the solo-acoustic portion of the night, which lasted for a few songs. Tritt then serenaded the crowd with “Love of a Woman”, as the blue glows of cell phone video screens lit up the rows of seats like fireflies. And when he went into the picked-out arpeggiated notes on his acoustic for his 1991 hit, “Anymore”, as his voice rang out particularly powerfully in this song, the crowd sang along for the refrains and even gave him a standing ovation at its end.

Tritt’s backing band is a slick, highly-experienced pro country ensemble, complete with keyboards, lead electric guitar, drums, bass/backing vocals, pedal steel guitar and fiddle – and it was a joy to take in their tremendous musical work throughout the show – as Tritt himself took a good amount of time that night to introduce and thank his band, whom he evidently cares a great deal about. And the band especially shone in the second half in fired-up tunes like “Country Club” and “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive”. Coming ‘round near the end of the night, some crowd members were allowed up near the stage (whereas security had held them back prior to that), and soon enough, a large crew of people gathered around Tritt as he sang at the front of the stage.
Shaking hands, fist bumping, and signing T-Shirts and hats, Tritt still didn’t miss a beat with his singing, as he ended the night with his 1991 hit, “Homesick (It’s All About to Change)”. “You’ve been a wonderful audience tonight, God bless you for coming,” Tritt shouted out to Credit Union Place, which roared back in cheers of appreciation as Tritt and his band exited the stage.

Thousands of country music fans flock to Travis Tritt concert in Summerside

Lifelong fans decked in checkered shirts, cowboy hats and boots waited to see two-time Grammy winner Travis Tritt kickoff country at the Credit Union Place Saturday evening.
A growing line of excited fans stretched from the lobby to the parking lot outside. Among those patiently waiting were Tammy Curtis and Brenda Ellsworth from Summerside.
“I am too excited and he has to sign my Alan Jackson hat,” said Curtis, who came with her best friend Ellsworth. “And Help Me Hold On is my favourite song because it just relates to life itself.” ‘Help Me Hold On’ is a ballad of a failing relationship and is the first number-one hit in the United States and Canada by the Georgia native. His music influences include southern rock, blues and gospel to create songs that have stamped him on the list with some of country’s biggest stars. “We have approximately 2,200 people in tonight,” said the event co-ordinator Robbie Rankin. “We would like to call it a sold-out show so it’s a successful night altogether and it certainly helps put the city on the map.”
Rankin continued, “This is a chance for many people to see a star that they grew up watching on television and people from P.E.I. don’t get the opportunity to see the big names all the time like they do in the bigger cities so if we can bring them here then we love to do that.
Tanya Eldershaw, from Souris, who came dressed in a checkered shirt and hat says Tritt stands the test of time. “I am very excited to be here and I saw Travis Tritt eight years ago in Moncton and he puts on the best concert I’ve ever seen and I’m expecting this to be even bigger and better,” she said. “I love all his songs but ‘Here’s a Quarter’ is my favourite because it was more like a drinking song back in the day.”
This year the Credit Union Place, that’s hosted a wealth of talent, celebrates its 10 th anniversary. “We’ve had lots of big names over the years,” said Rankin. “And for Summerside to pull this off it’s quite an accomplishment.”

Concert Review: Travis Tritt Steals The Show at Stagecoach Festival in Indio, CA

From Bylle Breaux Stasi at National Rock Review:

“Travis Tritt rides into the dusty desert and steals the show at the Stagecoach Festival while bluegrass bandits, Steep Canyon Rangers, set up the heist.”

“It was Travis Tritt in his all black get-up, who rode in and robbed Stagecoach.  The veteran performer and certified platinum artist knows how to sell country music with hit after hit of superior, generous, stadium-like showmanship. “I Wanna Be Somebody”, “Here’s a Quarter”, “and “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive” are only a small portion of his vast buffet of titles he served up.  He never stops smiling and that energy is contagious all the way through the crowd.  Tritt has filled the Palomino with euphoric, happy people, including some of the other acts that performed that day.  Those who came somewhat ambivalent of him, leave his performance Travis Tritt lifers.  It’s safe to say, he is nothing less a perfect country music performer.  ”
