Although Travis Tritt never donned the customary cowboy hat and always wore his hair rock-star long, his heart remained true to “honest-to-God country music.”
Friday at the Budweiser Rodeo Arena, 5,000 fans got a hearty helping of that along with some of the boot-scootin,’ hell-raisin’ music that got Tritt pegged — much to his pleasure — as a Nashville rebel.
The Georgia-born, platinum-selling artist ushered in the 2016 Colorado State Fair with a bang, a hoot and a holler. While Tritt’s hair is considerably shorter these days, at 53 he is as svelte, youthful and energetic as ever.
Tritt’s setlist was a nod to his versatility as an artist. Whether ballads from a barstool, straight-ahead country swing or the classics that came to define his career, Tritt remains a man for all musical seasons.
Appropriately, the show got rolling with “Put Some Drive in Your Country” and “High Time for Gettin’ Down,” with “a song for all my drinkers,” the honky tonky “Ten Feet Tall and Bulletproof,” and “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin,” not far behind.
After a few slower-paced numbers and a stellar take on the Eagles’ “Take It Easy,” Tritt hit the barstool, acoustic guitar in hand, for a stripped down mini-set that included “Tell Me I Was Dreaming,” “Country State of Mind,” “Outlaws Like Us” — dedicated to Tritt’s heroes with names like Jennings, Haggard, Jones and Cash — and the tender ballad “Anymore.”
Tritt later paid further tribute to Waylon Jennings with a cover of “I’ve Always Been Crazy,” with the spoken coda, “I love you Waylon and miss you every day of my life, Hoss.”
After a rollicking version of “Southbound Train,” fueled by fiddle and roadhouse piano, Tritt hit his stride with the one-two punch of “Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)” and “Country Club,” two of his most beloved hits.
A couple more aces — “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” and “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde” — were pulled from the sleeve before an extended jam session allowed the five-piece band to show off its formidable skills.
But before the curtain fell, Tritt dished out some “T-R-O-U-B-L-E,” a big-selling remake of The King himself, and the lesser-known but equally pleasing “Homesick” — a cover from the underrated Atlanta Rhythm Section and obvious nod to Tritt’s Georgia roots and love of classic rock.

Anyone who thinks country music isn’t what it used to be needs to go to a Travis Tritt concert. That man has kept country music country! His show was nothing short of fantastic. From the first song to the last, it was Travis doing what Travis does. And, he was so obviously enjoying it! While the capacity crowd was singing, clapping, screaming, and having the time of their lives, I really believe Travis was, too. Everyone watching could just tell that he loves what he does.
Travis hit the stage running, and he didn’t slow down through the whole show! He came out with “Drive”,”High Time for Getting Down,” and “Be Somebody”, before stopping to welcome the audience members. An audience that more than filled the sold-out reserved seating area, the grandstand, and every blade of grass surrounding the main stage area that they could find to stand on.
He moved on to “Whiskey Ain’t Working,” “Corn,” “Ten Foot Tall,” “Take It Easy,” and “Tell Me I’m Dreaming”. We got to hear “Outlaws Like Us,” “Anymore”, and several acoustic songs while the band took a well deserved break. That band, by the way, is made up of the most talented musicians you will find anywhere! Wendell Cox, Jared Decker, Joe Young, Brian Arrowood and Arlo Gilliaps.
It wouldn’t be a Travis Tritt show without “Here’s a Quarter,” “Great Day,” “Bonnie & Clyde,” and “Trouble,” and we got all of that, too! Travis gave us a little of Waylon. And of course, we got a lot of Travis. What we didn’t get was rock, pop or rap. We got country music. And, that entire crowd could not have been happier! The music industry, country radio program directors, and anyone out there who thinks they know what we want to hear on the radio is missing their mark, if you think that isn’t country. I mean real country! Here is a man, who can fill fairgrounds to over-flowing, and he is singing music we obviously still want to hear. It was awesome.
I had a serious camera problem. My pictures aren’t going to be as good as I would hope, since some came from my phone, some came from a small ‘point and shoot’ and some came from an older camera that I had in my car when my ‘good’ one up and died on me. But, things happen, life goes on, and learn to do the best with what we have. That’s what I had to do tonight, and it is those photos that I’m going to share with all of you. I’ll try not to complain. I went a great show. I got some photos. And, I met Travis Tritt! Try to tell me it gets better than that for a country music fan! Thank you Travis, for giving us such an incredible night at our Appalachian Fair in Gray, Tenn.

Snooty country club inspires a hit song
If it wasn’t for a snooty country club in Kansas City, Travis Tritt wouldn’t have scored his first hit single. Dennis Lord never got over the way he and his bandmates were treated during a gig at that club, so years later, when he was driving by Belle Meade Country Club, these lyrics popped into his head: “I’m a member of a country club/ Country music is what I love.”
He brought the idea to co-writer Catesby Jones, and after a few months and several rewrites, a country hit came to life. Lord told the story of “Country Club” to Bart Herbison of Nashville Songwriters Association International.

Throwback Top10 Chart: 1991 – Week 2
[From iwasborncountry.com]
7 days have passed and we have a new Throwback Top10 countdown! Though the vote count was a bit lower than last week, we still had a great turnout! With the latest song additions for next week’s poll, I have a good feeling that those numbers will be climbing once again!
It has been nearly a year since the last time that we saw Travis Tritt at the top of our countdown, but this was most definitely his week with “Drift Of To Dream!” It will be quite a feat if Tritt’s fans are able to vote the song to #1 for a second week with the new contenders being added!
